Streamsong Resort

After golf, unexpected adventures await at Streamsong Resort.

Streamsong, Florida: With the tremendous accolades that Streamsong Resort’s golf facilities have received (Streamsong Black was recently named Best New Public Course by Golf Digest), it’s easy to consider the luxury destination a “one-trick pony.”

“There is no question we are known for some of the best golf in the world,” said Tyler Ramsdell, recreation director at Streamsong Resort. “What may surprise you is our expert outdoor activities that are a perfect complement after your morning round of golf.”

Located about an hour from Tampa and 90 minutes from Orlando, Streamsong Resort owes much of its greatness to its land’s past. Built on a former phosphate mine, the resort is punctuated with dramatic elevation changes, abundant lakes, and 15 million cubic yards of sand—a sharp contrast to the rest of Central Florida’s relatively flat topography. This captivating geography is what sold golf course architects, Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw (Streamsong Red), Renaissance Golf Design/Tom Doak (Streamsong Blue), and Gil Hanse (Streamsong Black) on the project.

Patience Is A Virtue

A fourth ship was added last fall to Streamsong Resort’s small fleet of pontoon and Mako bass boats. “Our numerous lakes were created more than a half century ago when the land was mined,” said Ramsdell. “The depth and water quality sustain a healthy population of fish. It’s not uncommon for an angler to hook an eight-pound bass. In fact, we have caught one pushing 14 pounds! Our guides have a minimum of five years of experience and in my hundreds of outings with resort guests, only twice have we come away empty handed. It’s likely patience on the water will be rewarded.”

Six miles away, just out of earshot of golfers, is Streamsong Resort’s sporting clays and archery fields.

“It’s hard to believe, but during the 15-minute drive from the hotel, you never leave resort property—showing the massive scale of Streamsong’s 16,000 acres,” continued Ramsdell. “Our guides are NSCA [National Sporting Clays Association] certified, providing confidence for the novice shooter. We offer 12 gauge and 20 gauge [ideal for the beginner] Beretta A300 semi-automatic shotguns on a 12-station course with every imaginable scenario from clays mimicking rabbits hopping on the ground to birds darting straight up in the air. It’s interesting to note, when couples compete against one another, the wife beats the husband 90 percent of the time.

“Our archery course is equally entertaining with five Olympic size targets ranging from 10 to 30 feet. Instructors are USA Archery Level 1 certified to teach you the proper way to set, aim, and release a recurve bow,” said Ramsdell. I’ve noticed that golfers who are excellent putters tend to excel at archery. Commonalities between the sports require excellent hand/eye coordination and unwavering focus.”
