Charleston’s Island Town

Daniel Island represents the best of Southern living.

Daniel Island, South Carolina (15 miles north of Charleston’s historic district): The golf community industry has seen thousands of developers, big and small, build private clubs across the country. Only a handful has the expertise, financing, long-term vision to build a town. For more than two decades, the Daniel Island Company has been doing just that. They have recently introduced the last and most exclusive neighborhood in this award-winning community.

The Daniel Island Company was formed in the mid-1990s to develop 4,000 acres, previously owned by the Guggenheim family. “It’s easy to understand why prominent, wealthy industrialist families from the Northeast were drawn to our Lowcountry’s lifestyle and setting,” said Bill McKenzie, vice president of development for the Daniel Island Company. “Our hard work over the past two decades has integrated Tom Fazio and Rees Jones golf courses, thousands of homes, 25 miles of trails, and a pedestrian-friendly downtown with three schools, shopping, dining, medical offices and more.”

An Award-Winning Golf Community

A long-range vision and a single developer have helped Daniel Island evolve and mature well. The community has been honored with a prestigious “Award of Excellence” by the Urban Land Institute, which lauded the developer’s planning and financial management. “The island’s success exceeded even our most optimistic projections,” said McKenzie. “When development started in 1995, cattle were still grazing the land and the gas station was a central meeting point. Our growth was aided by the opening of an interchange off I-526, creating higher visibility and ease of access.”

Today, Daniel Island has a mix of more than 4,000 homes ranging from condominiums and small cottages to estate homes in neighborhoods set among golf courses and 23 miles of rivers and creeks. There are two professional sports facilities: The Family Circle Tennis Center (host to the Volvo Car Open) and MUSC Health Stadium (home to Charleston’s professional soccer team). And, with almost every service and convenience available right in the island’s downtown, there is little reason to leave.

Among the diversions keeping many island residents close to home is the private Daniel Island Club, with its golf, tennis, fitness, swimming and dining offerings and an expansive and scenic clubhouse serving as the center of social activity in the Daniel Island Park neighborhood.

The Best And Last Of Daniel Island

Not far from the Daniel Island Club’s recreational offerings, Captain’s Island is a small island located just off the mainland and accessible by bridge. The developer has saved this property overlooking the Wando River and two creeks as their last major property offering in this golf community. It will be home to 99 families who will enjoy the best of both worlds—a secluded coastal setting with convenience to both Daniel Island’s golf and recreational amenities and downtown Charleston.

“I have worked on Daniel Island’s master plan since the very beginning and I can say with certainty, Captain’s Island will be ‘the’ address,” said Steve Dudash, regional director for Thomas & Hutton Architects and a member of the planning team.

“On clear days, with unobstructed sightlines north and south, you might even catch a glimpse of the Castle Pickney Fort in Charleston Harbor.”
