The Magic of Manele — One of Jack Nicklaus’s best.

Island of Lana`i: Playing Manele Golf Course, as the sun sets over Hulopo`e Bay, showcases a moment in time where you realize the Four Seasons Resort Lana`i is special.

The scenery is so spectacular that twice a week the resort offers a scenic photo tour of Manele’s “ocean nine.” During winter months, humpback whales can be seen migrating through the islands.

“My course hugs the rugged Pacific coastline with dramatic over-the-ocean holes and breathtaking views,” described Jack Nicklaus. “I consider it a true work of art.”

“It’s magical,” promised Scott Ashworth, Manele’s PGA director of golf. “It’s an experience you won’t forget with ocean views from every hole. Besides proper club selection, keeping focused is critical. Your eye tends to wander at our surroundings.

“Our exclusivity is similar to the very best private clubs around the world. Tee times are rarely needed and often you will feel the course is yours for the day,” said Ashworth.

The golf course features three holes bordering oceanside cliffs with dramatic lava outcroppings. Several holes require do-or-die precise shots over natural gorges and ravines. “If heights frighten you, don’t even think about looking over the edge of the serrated cliffs!” said Nicklaus.

Special touches of Four Seasons greet you before the first tee. “Your cart has USB charging ports, Bluetooth speakers, and comfy bucket seats. Complimentary Bloody Marys, coffee, and pastries are part of your morning warm-up,” said Ashworth. “Our practice facility utilizes Titleist Pro-V1 balls and each tee area has a range finder providing actual yardages to target greens.”

Amidst A Botanical Garden

Four Seasons Resort Lana`i offers a simpler pace of life that reflects “Old Hawaii.” The island’s culture and heritage is prominently displayed throughout the resort with Polynesian art, including an authentic outrigger canoe dating back to the early 1900s in the main lobby.

The resort’s guest rooms and suites are set in a series of low-rise buildings spread along the Pacific coastline and surrounded by native botanical gardens.

On-site boutiques showcase Missoni, Jimmy Choo, and the Lana`i Collection.

Passion Fruit And Rambutan For Breakfast

Culinary excellence is a key element at the resort. As expected, only the freshest quality ingredients with attention on the catch of the day from local waters. Dishes worth savoring at ONE FORTY, NOBU LANA`I, the hotel’s signature restaurant, include prime bone-in rib eye with maple-braised chestnuts and Big Island lobster with crispy garlic.

Start your day off right with a trip to the make-your-own juice bar. Tropical fruits include pineapple (of course) and the more exotic guava, longan, and rambutan fruit (red, plum-sized, with soft spines and a slightly acidic taste). Save room in your appetite to sample a freshly prepared malasada, a Portuguese-style donut traced to the arrival of plantation workers supporting the state’s sugar and pineapple industries from generations ago.

The Sporting Life

Lana`i is an island meant to be explored. Popular day trips include backcountry Jeep tours, horseback riding through green upcountry, deep sea fishing, and helicopter tours.

“Hulopo`e Beach [right below the resort] is the best place to snorkel on the island,” said Alastair McAlpine, general manager. “A three-hour snorkel sail visits several sites, including Kaunolu on the southern shore. It’s quite an excursion, with a picnic lunch, too.

“Probably our most unusual opportunity is a visit to the resort’s 14-station sporting clay course,” expressed McAlpine. “Test your aim with clays simulating duck, quail, dove, pheasant and hopping rabbits.”

A Holistic Approach

“We strive to care for your mind, body, and spirit,” continued McAlpine. “The new yoga pavilion has been a success and one of our more unusual treatment options include sunset zen horse yoga.

“After spending a day enjoying the sporting life, relax at the Hawanawana Spa,” recommended McAlpine. “Its literal meaning ‘whispering ocean’ is appropriate. Essential ingredients and inspirations for treatment options are pulled directly from traditions of the Pacific.”

Four Seasons Resort Lana`i is investing significant resources in Koele, its sister property.

“Our goal is to open the brand new destination spa hotel by the end of the year,” stated McAlpine.
