FRENCH LICK RESORT

TOUR TESTED & PLAYER APPROVED

French Lick Resort has a history of hosting major tournaments, beginning with the 1924 PGA Championship.

French Lick, Indiana: Most would agree that Laura Davies, with 85 professional worldwide wins and earnings topping $9 million, is one of the most accomplished female golfers of modern times and a global ambassador of golf. The World Golf Hall of Famer has accomplished an enviable streak of winning at least one tournament, somewhere around the globe, every year for two decades (1985-2005).

“My first big paycheck was finishing second in the 1985 Hennessy Cup, one of Europe’s bigger events,” fondly recalled Davies. “With a few quid in the bank, I bought a television and VHS player.”

Last year, Laura added to her impressive résumé with wins at the U.S. Senior Women’s Open at Chicago Golf Club in Illinois and the Senior LPGA Championship at French Lick Resort in Indiana.

Heart Of Hoosier Country

French Lick Resort, with two sister hotels—the West Baden Springs Hotel and the French Lick Springs Hotel— first welcomed guests in 1845. Its buildings are listed in the National Register of Historic Places and the resort is recognized as one of the Historic Hotels of America by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The AAA four-diamond property has invested over $600 million in recent years. Amenities include the largest resort conference center in the Midwest; a full-service casino; two spas; the Kidsfest Lodge; a bowling alley; and 54 holes of golf, including Donald Ross and Pete Dye Signature designs.

“The first time I visited French Lick Resort was a shocker,” revealed Davies. “It’s a really special place. The more you explore, you realize how much it has to offer. The resort is the ultimate buddies destination. Drop a couple of beers in your cart’s cooler and head out to the first tee on the Dye Course. There’s no better place to play.

“During the Senior LPGA Championship, we competed on the Pete Dye Course,” continued Davies. “It’s a design built on the back of a mountain ridge that requires you to keep your wits about you at all times. With huge valleys and ravines, should you miss a fairway, odds favor you will be in trouble. On several holes, I made the strategic choice to give up some length off the tee to keep the ball on the short grass!

“A stay at West Baden Springs Hotel is recommended. My room had an indoor balcony that opened up to its massive indoor atrium. If you listen closely enough, you can hear your voice echo and reverberate.

“Women’s professional golf in America is growing and leveraging its assets from strength to strength,” smiled Davies. “Purses are rising and the new crop of players is deeper than it’s ever been. Thanks to destinations like French Lick Resort, the future of the LPGA couldn’t be brighter.”
