A Promise Fulfilled
Lake Nona has evolved from a world-class golf community to a destination envied around the world.
Orlando, Florida: No matter which political party you belong to, all will agree a strong jobs base is critical for growth and long-term stability. Lake Nona is an example of different parties with different needs, working together to accomplish one another’s goals.
“Lake Nona Golf & Country Club had long established itself on the golf scene,” reported Andy Odenbach, president of the community. “Our challenge was jumpstarting growth outside our gates. Up until a couple of years ago, when you made the turn off Beachline Expressway onto Narcoossee Road, we did not have much to offer other than a gas station.”
How times have changed.
“We knew the Veterans Administration was scoping locations for a large facility in Central Florida,” continued Odenbach. “We had the land and entitlements to make it happen.
“To get the process off the ground, our owner, Tavistock Group, donated $12.5 million and 50 acres of land to the University of Central Florida to help establish a medical school. The result is Medical City, a health and life sciences cluster.
“The aggregate of high paying medical jobs has ushered in more than 10 million square feet of current and planned commercial and retail development for shops, restaurants, and office space to service employees and residents that have moved to the area.
“Our area’s impressive growth hasn’t stopped there. The United States Tennis Association [USTA] recently opened its 63-acre, 100-court National Campus next to the country club, KPMG just selected Lake Nona for its $430 million, 800,000 square-foot global training center, and plans are now underway for a 23-acre soccer complex with six fields and a 20,000 square-foot clubhouse for the Orlando City Soccer Club’s training facility.
“Our business plan has been well thought out. It definitely hasn’t been a ‘wish upon a star.’ Over the last 10 years, the infrastructure has been completed and it is the first and only community in the United States to be designated a Cisco Iconic Smart+Connected Community, offering Internet speeds 200 times faster than the American average. An impressive 40 percent of the area has been reserved for open space including 44 miles of planned trails and 1,000 acres of lakes and waterways,” lauded Odenbach.
The Best Of Private Golf
Lake Nona Golf & Country Club delivers the highest quality of living in Central Florida to a vibrant, international population of members.
Its Tom Fazio designed golf course has been a regular host to a number of international tournaments including the inaugural Solheim Cup and the Tavistock Cup. The front nine’s secluded wooded canopy layout opens to an expanded back nine with lake vistas. There are three separate short game areas, one that is maintained to PGA Tour speed and specs. During weeks leading up to the Masters, the maintenance crew’s mowing protocol mimics Augusta National which mows from the green to the tee.
“My course sits on the best of Lake Nona’s 17 square miles. Tavistock is dedicated to excellence on and off the course. It’s an honor and a privilege to have Lake Nona as one of my flagship courses,” said Tom Fazio. “The name Lake Nona used to reference a lake. Now it is synonymous with great golf and so much more.”
The country club also features a newly renovated fitness center, guest lodge, tennis courts and pool, year-round children’s programming, as well as a trio of pristine lakes providing freshwater fishing and boating opportunities.
Plans are under way for a major expansion of the community. “In the coming years, 200 new homesites will be available, a second members’ only 20,000 square-foot clubhouse will be built, and a man-made lagoon [one of only a handful in the world] will open,” said Odenbach.
“Our land plan was prepared by some of the best architects, biologists, engineers, financial planners, and hospitality experts who came together to create a master blueprint that ‘did things better,’” concluded Odenbach. “In totality, Lake Nona offers the promise of the best in technology, health, convenience, and luxury lifestyle.”
