Mountain Shadows - Lawn & Guestrooms

Mountain Shadows is the newest golf resort to open in the Valley of the Sun.

Paradise Valley, Arizona: Mountain Shadows had long been a vacation hot spot for Hollywood’s elite. It wasn’t unusual to see Sammy Davis Jr. or Bob Hope strolling the grounds. During its heyday, the resort would draw a gallery in the thousands to watch Billy Casper and golf’s greats tee off at the Mountain Shadows Open.

As the Valley of the Sun expanded, Mountain Shadows took a backseat to other newer mega golf resorts that opened along the Scottsdale corridor.

After a $70 million top-to-bottom renovation, wherein the resort was rebuilt from the ground up and its par-3 course was redesigned, the new Mountain Shadows is a reemergence of an icon.

“There’s a reason land is so valuable in Paradise Valley,” explained Forrest Richardson, golf course architect. “Its location can’t be beat. Mountain Shadows is literally the center of the bullseye with Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, spring training games, and the shops and restaurants of Scottsdale less than 15 minutes away. With such proximity to the airport, you can play golf on the days you arrive and depart, making it feel like you added two days to your vacation.”

A Round That’s Rich In Heritage

“If you polled a group of random golfers in a 19th hole across the country and asked, ‘name a couple of your favorite holes of all time?’ odds are many would be par-3s,” continued Richardson. “I surmise part of the reason is each time you step on a par-3 tee box, even if the thought is fleeting, you imagine the thrill of a hole-in-one.”

Each hole at Mountain Shadows has a whimsical name. “That’s not to say we didn’t take the design seriously,” critiqued Richardson. “The average green size on a PGA Tour course is about 6,000 square feet. The dual-green on No. 13 and No. 14 at Mountain Shadows is an expansive 17,000 square feet. Conditioning is tops with greens rolled and double cut daily.”
