THE BUZZ ON PINEHURST RESORT’S NEWEST AMENITY

Pinehurst, North Carolina: The story of the “Home of American Golf” began in 1895, when Boston Philanthropist James Walker Tufts purchased 5,800 acres of ravaged timberland. The property, which cost Tufts about $1 per acre, once held a flourishing pine forest that had been cut for timber and used for its plentiful supply of turpentine and building supplies. What was left behind was a barren, sandy wasteland, a secret ingredient in the recipe for building a golf course.

Over the years, Pinehurst Resort has expanded to offer nine golf courses that have hosted more championships than any other club in the country—a tradition that will continue when the 2024 U.S. Open returns to its iconic Donald Ross designed Pinehurst No. 2.

Sip And Savor

Last year, the resort’s long abandoned original steam plant, built more than a century ago to provide Pinehurst electricity and heat, was converted into Pinehurst Brewing Company, a craft brewery with nine original beers always on tap.

“Incredibly, Americans consume 63 billion glasses of beer annually,” explained Eric Mitchell, head brewer at Pinehurst Brewing Company. “We are decidedly smaller, preparing only 1,500 glasses per day. Although we always have our two favorites available—an IPA [called Pivot] and a blonde ale [called Golden Age]—we are continually experimenting.

“Once I investigated brewing with coconut; that didn’t go as planned. Since the coconut had been sweetened, the final product tasted like Coppertone suntan lotion! Needless to say, it didn’t make it on the menu,” grinned Mitchell.

“Probably one of my biggest surprises was demand for our strawberry Kolsch. Our batch sold out in five days and received one of the highest rankings on the craft beer app Untappd.

“As the days grow shorter and cooler, stout season is upon us,” advised Mitchell. “After your day of golf, join us for our seasonal oatmeal stout, AM Smack, named for its hint of coffee.”
