Riverbend at Kohler is a grand estate that’s rich with history and nostalgic allure.

KOHLER, WISCONSIN: Founded in 1873, Kohler Co. is one of the largest privately owned firms in America with approximately 38,000 associates. The multinational corporation has three main business groups: kitchen and bath, power, and hospitality.

 Destination Kohler

About a two-hour drive north from Chicago and an hour from Milwaukee, Kohler is a truly special garden community with a sizable manufacturing presence and resort operations.

“Our four courses are all ranked in ‘100 Greatest Public Golf Courses’ by Golf Digest,” proudly reported David Albrecht, head membership golf professional at Riverbend. “In September, the Ryder Cup will be hosted on The Straits at Whistling Straits, our Pete Dye masterpiece sculpted along two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. I consider it a miracle of design and a must play.

“That’s not to say our other three championship designs aren’t noteworthy. The Irish Course features grassland and dunes, creating a deceivingly tranquil landscape, while The River Course is demanding to the eye and doesn’t disappoint. Your golf adventure isn’t complete unless you add The Meadow Valleys Course to your rotation of play. I consider it one of the most underrated designs in the Midwest.”

Higher Standard Of Gracious Living

In the early 1920s, the Kohler family commissioned architect Richard Philipp and the respected Olmsted Brothers to design and build their family home, named Riverbend. “Expectations were high,” described Bart van Deventer, general manager at Riverbend. “The Olmsted Brothers were well known during the era for creating Central Park in New York City and the Harvard and Stanford University campuses.

“The English Tudor-inspired estate served as the Kohler family residence until the early 1980s. When The American Club Resort opened [a 10-minute walk away], discussion turned to how to best utilize what was acclaimed as one of the 50 most beautiful mansions in America of its era,” continued Van Deventer.

Today, Riverbend is a private club with 31 elegantly appointed guest rooms for member and guest use. “With membership comes privileges,” detailed Van Deventer. “In addition to member-only tee times on four golf courses, access is provided to all of Kohler’s amenities including Sports Core [offering tennis, swimming and fitness facilities], River Wildlife [a 500-acre wilderness preserve], and Kohler Waters Spa [with an enclosed rooftop deck with whirlpool, fireplace, and lounge offering a year-round escape].”
