CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO: The history of golf in America is filled with more than a handful of golf clubs claiming to be the oldest. Of course, none can truly claim the mantle, as it has long been understood that golf began in Scotland, more than five centuries ago. The great game eventually made it to the shores of America sometime in the 17th century, but it was nothing like the sport we know today. The first 18-hole course was created in 1764 at the famed Old Course, which is why the hallowed ground of St. Andrews is considered the birthplace of golf.

However, America did change the game when it came to combining golf and real estate. While the concept was born in the 1960s, the pairing of championship golf with real estate began in earnest in the ’80s, and took a permanent foothold in the ’90s. By this time, roughly 60 percent of all new courses were affiliated with master planned residential communities, and while the trend may have slowed, it would never be reversed.

As those who witnessed the explosive growth of golf communities in the ’90s will attest, there is a collection of trailblazers who will forever be credited with impacting the direction of golf and real estate development. One of the most notable has long been The Lyle Anderson Company. The entity’s marked success began with Desert Highlands in Scottsdale, Arizona, and, over the decades, expanded to include Desert Mountain (Scottsdale, Arizona), Las Campanas (Santa Fe, New Mexico), Loch Lomond Golf Club (Scotland), Hokulia (Big Island of Hawaii), and Superstition Mountain (East Valley, Phoenix Metro Arizona). All told, The Lyle Anderson Company has developed some of the most successful and well-regarded luxury private golf communities in the world, spanning more than 40 years.

But the communities alone don’t tell the entire story. Nearly all of these properties also served as a catalyst in the creation of some of the industry’s most memorable professional golf events. The first-ever televised Skins Game. The Tradition. Loch Lomond World Invitational. And the list goes on. In total, more than 40 champions were created, and history was made in a way that will be recalled fondly for centuries.

The Next Chapter…Home by the Sea, in a Country Beloved by Many

With a long list of golf communities still regarded as some of the world’s finest, and golf tournaments with dozens of past champions, what could possibly be next?

The Lyle Anderson Company is a family owned and operated real estate investment and development firm, founded by Lyle Anderson and meticulously managed by his oldest son, Taber Anderson. After nearly 40 years in the industry (beginning as an apprentice on his family’s earliest projects), Taber has a keen ability to see the potential in a piece of land and then bring his vision into reality.

His passion for the industry, combined with an intuitive sense for creating communities that increase in value over time, is what led to his current post as CEO of Old Lighthouse Golf & Ocean Club in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

In addition to working alongside Lyle, Taber has developed other well-regarded communities in Arizona, including Pine Canyon in Flagstaff and Talking Rock Ranch in Prescott. While his experience of working with his family business has proven invaluable, it might be his ability to marry this experience with another developer’s aspirations that allows him to be such an effective partner. It was this exact skillset that inspired Ernesto Coppel (the owner of the land on which Old Lighthouse Club presently sits) to arrange a meeting with Taber and Lyle.

“During my initial meeting and tour with Ernesto,” said Taber, “it would have been almost impossible to articulate my reaction, upon seeing the site that would become the Old Lighthouse Club. Between my absolute respect for all that Ernesto has accomplished, and knowing we were standing on some of the best land I had ever encountered, I was overwhelmed. It’s singularly the most spectacular site I’ve seen, and I have seen a lot.”

While the land itself is beyond reproach, being just a few minutes outside the heart of Cabo makes the location even more desirable. Coupled with stunning custom homesites, inspired finished product and a collection of amenities rivaling those of most any Anderson Community, it is clear the future of luxury in Cabo San Lucas has arrived, and it is the Old Lighthouse Golf & Ocean Club.

The “Grandfather of Cabo”

Formerly a rustic port favored by deep-sea fishermen, Los Cabos (comprised of the cities of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo) has transformed into a beacon for upscale tourism in a span of 30 years. “So many factors have contributed to Cabo’s rapid growth,” said Taber. “Everything from a location easily reached from the Continental U.S. and Canada, to a continuously improving international airport, first-class marina operations, and the presence of several 5-star hotels…each element has played a critical role. The region has a specific blend of Mexican and American cultures and values. Locals are eager to please, and the spirit of adventure is palpable.”

Ernesto Coppel has teamed with Lyle and Taber Anderson in order to fulfill his family’s vision for Old Lighthouse Golf & Ocean Club to become the most sought after addresses in all of Cabo. Once complete, amenities will include two Jack Nicklaus Signature courses, a beautifully designed Grand Villa Clubhouse, Beach House, and an Athletic Club, all with stunning sunrise and sunset views over the ocean (a rarity in Cabo).

“The community sits squarely at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, the true kilometer 0, where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. There are no views as grand in all of Cabo, and perhaps even the world,” detailed Taber. “In what Jacques Cousteau called ‘the world’s aquarium,’ you can fish, sail, scuba dive, pleasure cruise or experience some of the most spectacular whale watching anywhere in the world.

“While it may have taken us decades to get to Cabo, it has been worth the wait. There is no question Old Lighthouse Golf & Ocean Club may end up being our best community yet,” shared Taber. “It is my hope, and firm belief, that we will fulfill Ernesto’s vision, while also delivering the unmatched quality of life so many are hoping to find in this spectacular place.”
