Super Bowl Versus Masters

The cost of a 30 second television commercial can range anywhere from $1,000 to over $8,000,000. Augusta National does not charge CBS or ESPN a rights fee to air the Masters. As a result, ad revenue generated is essentially an afterthought; together, the three sponsors (IBM, AT&T, and Mercedes-Benz) last year paid an estimated $23.8 million to air their spots during the final two rounds, an amount that offset CBS’ production costs. Cost to run a 30 second commercial at last week’s Super Bowl – $8,000,000.

Opportunity Costs

Recent analysis by an National Golf Foundation into more than 500 U.S. courses and 10 million rounds revealed a no-show rate of 9%, which would add up to about $1 billion in lost opportunity annually.
